AMURTEL is an international volunteer organization that works to help improve the quality of life for people experiencing chronic poverty or acute stress from environmental, financial, or political distress. We encourage and enable individuals and communities to harness their own resources for securing the basic necessities of life and for gaining greater economic sustainability and social and spiritual fulfilment. It is the goal of AMURTEL to assist communities in their recovery and development while honouring their customs, language, and religious beliefs.

AMURTEL Greece is an NGO in Athens, Greece run entirely by women and for women and children. We are a safe woman's space for highly vulnerable refugee and migrant mothers and infants from pregnancy until two years after birth. We are the only woman-to-woman center of this type in Athens and provide all services as per WHO/UNICEF guidelines.

Pregnancy and infancy are two of the most vulnerable periods in life. Refugees and migrants are disproportionately at high risk. We aim to mitigate the long-term effects of crises on refugee infants and their mothers by supporting women to be the best possible mothers they can be and thus give their infants the best possible start in life.

We believe all mothers have the right and the capacity to maintain or restore their health, well-being, dignity and self-determination.

Women come to us to receive:

The opportunity to create community with other mothers in order to overcome the often devastating effects of isolation and loneliness

Empowerment as mothers, to mother their babies in the best possible way despite the challenging situations they face

Individualized midwifery care during pregnancy and postpartum

Education and support for breastfeeding and all aspects of infant feeding

Group sessions on many topics including reproductive health, family planning, infant care, breastfeeding and infant nutrition in Arabic, Farsi, French and English

All mothers and babies deserve the best possible care during pregnancy and infancy.
